Big Brothers Big Sisters offers one-to-one and group mentoring services. On-going orientation sessions are provided and can help prospective volunteers determine what mentoring program best suits and interests them. For the next scheduled orientation, call Big Brothers Big Sisters or visit the agency website.
All volunteers are screened, trained, and professionally supported. Screening includes, but is not limited to: police check, four references, and interview. A 1½ to 2 hour training session provides volunteers with an understanding of the children and families BBBS works with; what it means to be a mentor to a child and why it works; and the specific structure and ground rules for each program. In supporting matches between "Littles" and "Bigs," case managers offer guidance and encouragement, suggest ideas and resources for activities, and facilitate the development of a strong friendship.
One-to-One Mentoring Programs
¨ Community based programProvides "Bigs" for one-to-one relationships with children and teens. Youth referred into the program have a demonstrated need for service (e.g. economically disadvantaged, inadequate support and attention of a stable adult, etc.). The mentoring relationship encourages youth to develop strong principles and values, form positive self-images, gain confidence, make informed choices, and accept responsibility. Volunteer Commitment: Minimum of one year; suggested 8 hours per month.
¨ Couples Match Program"Littles" are matched with a couple wanting to give time together. Both partners act as "Big" to the child, providing an opportunity for the child to receive positive relationship role-modeling as well as the support and guidance of adult friends. Couples are free to plan activities together or individually with their "Little." Volunteer Commitment: Minimum of one year; suggested 8 hours per month.
¨ Club ConnectionA collaborative program of the Boys & Girls Club and Big Brother Big Sisters. Volunteers meet with their "Little" at the club during Club hours (Mon-Fri). The Boys & Girls Club setting is rich in resources such as a computer lab, games, books, gym, and more. Additional activities and experiences take place within walking distance of the club (e.g. downtown, IU campus). Volunteer Commitment:: Minimum of one year or two consecutive semesters; suggested 6- 8 hours per month.
¨ School FriendsServes elementary school children. Meetings take place during the school day, on school grounds. The friendship between the child and mentor makes coming to school a more enjoyable and rewarding experience for the child. Time spent with the child may include reading, schoolwork, journal writing, games, computer, or shooting baskets. Volunteer Commitment:: School year; one hour weekly.
Group Mentoring Programs
¨ First FriendsFirst Friends is an activities program exclusively for children on our waiting list for a "Big" in our community-based and Couples Match programs. Two group activities are offered each month (e.g. roller skating, zoo, bowling) and include educational and recreational outings. Volunteers provide transportation and companionship to no more than three children for each activity. There is no cost to children or volunteers. Volunteer Commitment: Eight months; minimum of one event per month.
¨ Explorers ClubCollaborative program of Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Encourages teens to identify options for their future in the workforce. Meetings allow small group activities and discussion; field trips create an atmosphere of fun and excitement as youth learn about the world of work and play. Volunteer Commitment:: Minimum of one semester; 2 hours weekly

Habitat is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry whose objective is to eliminate poverty housing from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience. By having affluent and poor work together in equal partnership, Habitat hopes to build new relationships and a sense of community as well as new houses. There are several hundred families in Monroe County living in very inadequate facilities who are financially unable to secure home ownership. Habitat seeks to work in partnership with these individuals. Funding comes from individuals, churches, corporations, foundations, and other organizations which are moved by concern and compassion to help those in need. Mortgage payments are put into a local Fund for Humanity and recycled to build new houses. New homeowners are required to contribute their labor in addition to their monthly house payments so they, too, can help others have decent housing. No government funds are used. Cost of houses differs due to location, labor, land and materials. Mortgages on a non-profit, no-interest basis are issued over a fixed time period.
